What a year! The year Brazil had no less than 4 Presidents! 1954 had been tragic enough with the suicide of Getúlio Vargas whose Vice-President Café Filho was hoisted as President. The right-wing saw great possibilities in the ascencion of Café Filho because he was a conservative politician even though he had been elected in a left-of-the-centre coalition.
1955 was an electoral year. Juscelino Kubitschek had been chosen the candidate of the Getúlio camp and he ended up winning the election of 3 October 1955.
Exactly 4 weeks later, on 3 November 1955, President Café Filho apparently suffers a heart attack and enters hospital. Lower House speaker is declared President of Brazil while Café Filho is in hospital. Actually, it was a right-wing manouvre to start a military coup to prevent President elect Juscelino Kubitschek to take power as President in the new year.
Lacklustre Carlos Luz can't get his act together and ends up holing himself in a Navy's warship that shoots a few shots against some target but fizzles up. Defense Minister Marshal Teixeira Lott sees that Carlos Luz is neutralized and declared 'null'.
On 25 November 1955, Senate's President Nereu Ramos declares himself President to wait until the new year for the inauguration of Kubitschek as President of Brazil.
